It's Jazz Festival Week!!

This week is the week of the third annual Winchester Jazz Festival. I am fortunate enough to be one of the directors of this festival that has got bigger and better with each year, it makes me very excited and optimistic about the future of jazz music in my home city.

This year there is a rich and varied programme. We kicked off the week with a vocal workshop for Encore Youth Theatre. I am looking forward to leading another one on Wednesday evening at Cabinet Rooms. It’s too hard for me to pick one favourite but a few highlights are going to be the Friday evening Swinging from the Chandeliers at the Winchester Guildhall. It’s going to be a swing collective lead by myself and will feature 9 different vocalists throughout the evening. It’s a wonderful combination of swing dancing, lead by world class Lindy Hop teachers Bic and Simone Graham from The Lindy Club, and jazz talent that’s sure to make an incredible night.

On Saturday I will be very excited to witness the workshops that we have on offer. Derek Nash will be leading an improvisation workshop and Edana Minghella will be delivering a jazz singing workshop. Both are esteemed experts in their field, I am really looking forward to learning all I can from them.

The Saturday evening I will be guest featuring with Steve Christie’s band Lounge Lizard. It’s going to be the first time I have played with this group for about 10 years so it will be lovely to play some of Steve’s compositions again.

I was recently lucky enough to play with our closing act the Tuba Libres so I have a good idea of what an epic end to the festival this will be. It’s going to be the Sunday evening at the Railway Inn which is a key venue and supporter of the festival.

So get your tickets!! Or come along and watch some of the free jazz trail that has been so kindly supported by lots of Winchester businesses. And if you see me buzzing around the city this week then please do come and say hello!
